The Chiponde-Mandimba OSBP project entails the construction of comprehensive border facilities on the Malawian side, which will include access roads and parking areas. The OSBP facility is designed to accommodate various border agencies, such as security, health, customs, and immigration, through the establishment of three main buildings: a passenger processing terminal and administration (Block A), a cargo clearing warehouse (Block C), and a police block (Block B). Additional construction will involve circulation roads, parking bays, a scanner building, and several ancillary structures. The facility will be equipped with essential utilities, including electricity, water, wastewater connections, and advanced communication systems. For the Chiponde-Mandimba OSBP, the Roads Authority (RA) has appointed Prospectiva-Infraworks Development LTD JV, as the Consulting Engineer for the Chiponde-Mandimba One Stop Border Post (OSBP) project.
The Roads Authority has conducted compensation assessment for PAPs around the area, eight Community Grievance Redress Committees (GRCs) have been formed and trained, although they lack essential resources for operational functionality. The RA has plans to develop work plans and provide registration forms for these committees following the establishment of the Chiponde-Mandimba OSBP GRCs.
The Chiponde OSBP is located on the Nacala Transport Corridor; on the Mangochi Chiponde Road in Malawi and the Mandimba ‑Chiponde Mozambique connecting Zambia and Malawi to the port of Nacala in Mozambique. The Nacala transport corridor is the vital trade route serving major trade-dependent economies within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), such as Zambia and Malawi.
